-- GEI Hunger Project--

Reference is made to the aforementioned subject. Wajir West constituency is in the grip of an intense drought, induced by four consecutive seasons of poor rainfall. In the worst affected areas, poor rainfall and lack of water has wiped out livestock, while communities are being forced to sell their assets, and borrow food and money to survive. Since mid- 2018, drought conditions have been expanding with impact worsening over time. The drought situation is compounded by protracted conflict of cattle rustling, which is causing displacements, seasonal climatic shocks as a result of most extreme phenomenon in 50 years, and disease outbreaks like cholera.

Recent assessments from National Drought Management predict a continuation of the drought in 2018 and 2019 with an increase in the constituency sliding to the next higher ICP phase. The latest food security and nutrition analysis from the Save the children, WFP and other international organization and the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWSNET) issued on recently reveals that the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance has increased from 3 million in September 2021 to 4.2 million between September,2022 and December 2022.

The humanitarian situation in Wajir West Constituency remains dire with drought alerts being sounded and a repeat of the 2011 famine that happened in Somalia feared. A number of shocks experienced in 2022, drought, conflict, persistent protection challenges and disease outbreaks illustrate Wajir West Constituency continued fragility. Vulnerability levels remain critical, due to continued insecurity and extremely low levels of socio-economic development - resulting in limited ability to absorb recurrent shocks.
